Cal Maritime Wins Fifth Consecutive Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup

Going into Sunday’s races, on the final day of the three-day intercollegiate invitational big boat regatta, Cal Maritime had a one-point lead over College of Charleston, with third place University of Southern California holding off Navy by just four points. Skies were overcast but temps warm, and the westerly breeze lively.

Navy finished second, to inch the USC Trojans out of third place overall, while California State University Long Beach rebounded from an OCS to take third place in that race and sixth overall.

Navy dismissed their Race Nine protest – leaving Cal Maritime uncontested at the top, with a three point advantage over Charleston.

“At one point in the race it thought it was all over," said Chris Vilicich, Cal Maritime skipper. "I thought to myself, ‘We just have to be really patient, do everything we practiced, and hope for the best.’”

“The team did great,” he continued. “Our boat handling was almost perfect, we made very few mistakes. I was super happy and very proud of them.”

“I’m really fortunate to have won it this year,” added Vilicich. Defending Cal Maritime’s four-year winning streak put “a ton of pressure” on the team. “I’ve been super-nervous the past two weeks – but now that it’s finally over I’m relieved.”  View pictures and videos from the race on Cal Maritime Sailing's Facebook page.  (Scuttlebutt Sailing News)

Men's Basketball Reaches Fourth Straight National Tournament

The Cal Maritime men's basketball team lost to Mt. Mercy of Iowa, 64-61, in the first round of the NAIA Division II tournament at College of the Ozarks in Missouri.

The Keelhaulers, who won the California Pacific Conference regular season and tournament title, were back in the tournament for the fourth straight season. The Keelhaulers (19-10) had a chance to tie the game down just 64-61 with 5.3 seconds left. However, Cal Maritime could not get the ball to 3-point specialist Levi Strandberg as time ran out.

"I'm extremely proud of the way the guys fought back tonight," Cal Maritime head coach Bryan Rooney said. "They showed what was the case all year — that there was no quit in them. It just didn't work out tonight but I couldn't be prouder."
