Cal Maritime Names New Vice President for University Advancement

Robert Arp has been named California State University Maritime Academy's new Vice President for University Advancement. Arp comes to Cal Maritime with more than 25 years in higher education and healthcare fund development, most recently as the vice president for development at MedStar Harbor Hospital in Baltimore where he established the first system-wide, comprehensive fundraising plan.

He is also a Captain in the United States Navy Reserve. Since September 11, 2001, Captain Arp has been mobilized three times to support Operation Noble Eagle and Operation Enduring Freedom. He was also recalled to three years of active duty to serve on the Navy staff in the Pentagon.

Arp's appointment begins on June 24. He succeeds Beverly Byl, who is retiring June 30 after three-and-a-half years at Cal Maritime and three decades in educational fundraising.

Cal Maritime Assists Refugees Off the Coast of Spain

Cadets, faculty and staff aboard the Training Ship Golden Bear assisted Algerian refugees at sea yesterday off the coast of Spain.

A small boat approached the Golden Bear. Those aboard were waving their hands, shouting and holding empty gas cans in the air. Based on observations of the crew, the boat was not determined to pose a threat, but precautions were taken before turning around to assist.

One Cal Maritime cadet who speaks fluent Arabic assisted the Chief Mate in communicating with the refugees who were seeking asylum in Spain. While waiting for assistance from the Spanish Coast Guard, food and water were passed down to the boat. Cadets from Cal Maritime took up a collection and passed a donation of 100 Euros to the refugees as well.

Following the arrival of the Spanish Coast Guard, the Training Ship resumed its voyage. Cal Maritime students are sailing the Golden Bear back from Europe as part of the first of two summer training cruises which began in Vallejo, California on April 26. Both Cruises pass through the Panama Canal, and scheduled stops include the U.S. Virgin Islands, Barcelona, Naples, Boston and Long Beach.

The crew of students, faculty and staff members will change on June 25 in Boston when the second cruise begins. In all, the T.S. Golden Bear will travel 26,000 miles before returning to campus on August 24.

Women's Basketball New Head Coach

Cal Maritime’s Athletic Director, Marv Christopher, has announced that lead assistant coach, Tony Jones, has been promoted to fill the women's basketball head coaching vacancy. Jones becomes the third women's basketball coach in the program's young history.

Christopher remarked on the hiring, "Tony Jones has been an Assistant Coach for the Cal Maritime Women's team for the past two years. Tony has proven that he can make a difference at this level.  His ambition to work hard and to set high goals will make him a valuable asset to the program.  Cal Maritime is proud to name Tony Jones as the new Head Women's Basketball Coach."

A Vallejo native, Jones graduated from St. Patrick-St. Vincent's High School in Vallejo and then attended the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, Rhode Island.  Following his year at Navy Prep, Jones attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, in 1998.  Jones returned to California in 2013 in hopes of advancing his coaching career.  Being a Vallejo native he sought out an opportunity to coach at Cal Maritime, while simultaneously pursuing and earning his Master's degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration, from Concordia University, Irvine.
