Cal Maritime – Home of the CSU’s Three Millionth Alum

This year, Cal Maritime is celebrating 20 years in the California State University system, and the CSU is crossing the milestone of having three million alumni worldwide. Cal Maritime’s April 25 Commencement Ceremony is the earliest in the 23-campus system, making the Academy the first campus in the state to celebrate the three million alumni milestone (and making it pretty easy for one of our graduates to stake the claim to being number 3 million).

The keynote speaker for the Commencement ceremony is Congressman John Garamendi of California’s Third Congressional District. Garamendi, elected to Congress in 2009, is a ranking member of the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Subcommittee.

The Military Commissioning Ceremony will be held at 9:00 a.m. on the Quad. Senior Awards will be presented at 10:30 a.m. in Rizza Auditorium. For a full rundown of the day’s activities, visit www.csum.edu/commencement.

Second Annual Shave to Save Project

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee held the 2nd Annual Markie Cosca Memorial Shave to Save Project on Wednesday, March 25th.  The purpose of the event was not only to raise support and awareness for those battling cancer, but also to be part of the solution.

The Student Athletic Advisory Committee partnered with Be the Match®, the nation’s leading bone marrow donor registry.  The event was named for Markie Cosca, the son of Mark Cosca of Dining Services. Markie  who battled cancer twice in his young 11 years.

Markie passed away in the Summer of 2013, but his inspiration continues.  Over 70 students, faculty, and staff shaved their heads to show their support.  Hannah Jacobs from Be the Match® was on site to gather potential donors.  The project saw over 40 individuals join the registry.  You can find more information on Be the Match® at bethematch.org.

College Town Vallejo Launch

As the home to three institutions of higher learning, Vallejo is an educational hub for thousands of college students. The City of Vallejo, Cal Maritime, Touro University California and Solano Community College recently launched a new phase of the city’s College Town initiative, designed to celebrate this essential feature of the community. The College Town banners can be seen along Georgia Street in downtown Vallejo.

Keelhauler Rugby in National Semifinal

New Timeline for Alumni Award Nominations

Historically, the Distinguished Alumni Award nomination period has been from November through February. This time frame has resulted in a short two-month review and turnaround to select from the candidate pool and get everything in place for the Commencement ceremony in April. The awardee has then taken the summer off (so to speak) and returns to celebrating in the fall semester.

The timeline and process is currently under review by the nominating committee to do the following: increase the number of awards, provide better language explaining the awards, and provide online criteria for each award.  A new timeline for Alumni Award nominations will provide a more transparent process and allow us to feature and celebrate the awardee(s) parallel to the school year and programming.  The nominating period is still open.

During this transition, there is no 'new' Distinguished Alumni for this year's commencement ceremony.  Those selected for the 2015-2016 year will be celebrated at the 2016 commencement culminating and continuing in the tradition of providing an example of excellence for those graduating.

Please note: the nominations submitted in 2014 and 2015, are being reviewed for 2015-2016 consideration.

Thank you all for remaining engaged and for your patience during this transitory period. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact either Pascha McAllister, President, Alumni Association at president@alumni.csum.edu, or Kathy Baird, Director of Annual Giving and Alumni Relations at kbaird@csum.edu
