2009 Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient

Robert McAllister

Robert McAllister graduated from the California Maritime Academy in February 1942, in a fast-track program that had been accelerated due to the outbreak of World War II. Immediately after graduation, he went to sea aboard Matson’s luxury liner Lurline, then working as a troop transport ship.  Bob went on to serve on seven different Liberty ships during the War. In the urgency of the war years, McAllister rose rapidly to the rank of Captain, just two years after his graduation from Cal Maritime. Captain McAllister later served as a Panama Canal Pilot from 1951-1975, guiding all manner of ships, including the Training Ship Golden Bear, through the Canal.

After his retirement, Bob and his Edith moved to Florida. Following his wife’s death in 2001, Bob decided to establish a scholarship in her name – The Robert and Edith McAllister Endowment Fund. His initial gift of $600,000 has since been supplemented with additional contributions, which have pushed his total giving to more than $1 million. In his words, “I was very fortunate in many ways. It just seemed natural to give back to the school that did so much to help me start my long career as a captain and pilot.”

Bob McAllister received the Cal Maritime Distinguished Alumni award in 2009.
