Jim Morgan

Upon graduation in 1976 Jim Morgan worked as Able Seaman and Third Mate at Chevron Shipping. In 1977 he transitioned to ARCO and served as Mate, Master and Manager of Vessel Operations. At the Port of Los Angeles, he served as Manager of Pilot operations and retired in 2014 as the Director of Port Construction & Maintenance.  He holds an unlimited USCG Masters license and is a First Class Pilot for Alaskan and Southern California waters.

Jim served for many years on the United States delegation to the International Maritime Organization’s Marine Safety Committee in London.  He represented his company’s marine safety interests by serving on standing marine committees of the American Petroleum Institute, the American Institute of Merchant Shipping, the Oil Companies International Marine Forum, the Western States Petroleum Association and the Los Angeles / Long Beach Harbor Safety Committee.

He served as Director and President of the Marine Exchange VTS of Southern California. He is a member of the Nautical Institute and the Council of American Master Mariners of which in 2007, he received the “LaLonde Spirit of the Seas Award” the Council’s highest honor.  He volunteered in his community by serving on the Board of Directors of the International Seafarers Center, International Trade and Education Programs and the Long Beach YMCA.

Jim is as avid sailor and yachtsman.  Along with his wife Jill, they raced their Santa Cruz 50 Fortaleza on numerous ocean races including the Transpac Hawaii and Tahiti races and many Mexico races. They cruised their Grand Banks trawler for many years in Southern California and other cruising included the British Virgin Islands, Bahamas, Gulf of Maine, Chesapeake Bay and the Pacific Northwest.  Jim is a past Commodore and member of the Los Angeles Yacht Club, member of Transpacific Yacht Club, Cruising Club of America, US Sailing and the International Sailing Federation.

He has been a strong advocate and supporter of Cal Maritime over the years.  He has hired and mentored scores of Cal Maritime graduates and has been a generous financial supporter of the Foundation.  He serves on the Board of Directors of California Maritime Academy Foundation, is Chairman of the Marine Development Committee and is a Charter Cal Maritime Alumni Life Member.  In 2008 he founded the “Port of Los Angeles Harbor Cup – Cal Maritime Intercollegiate Regatta”, which is organized and hosted by the Los Angeles Yacht Club.  This regatta, now in its tenth year, brings the top varsity collegiate sailing teams from around the country to compete offshore of Los Angeles in the Congressional Cup’s Catalina 37’s.  The only intercollegiate ocean “big boat” regatta held on the West Coast.  Competing teams have included among others, the US Naval Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, USC, Northwestern University, all the state Maritime Academies and Kings Point.  Cal Maritime has won five regattas!

His proudest accomplishment over his career was his Chairmanship of the International Trade and Education Program’s (ITEP) GSS Academy at Banning High School in Wilmington, an economically underserved school within the Los Angeles Unified School District. Some goals of the program are to improve students’ academic performance and encourage them to seek maritime-related careers.  Since 2005, Jim and fellow alumnus Frank Whipple have accompanied more than 30 student sophomores each summer to Cal Maritime for one week to participate in STCW Basic Safety courses, and experience a taste of college life.   More than 350 students have attended this Cal Maritime program over the past 11 years.  The ITEP academies graduation rate has steadily performed at over 90%.  In 2014, 17 Banning graduates were enrolled at Cal Maritime, more than any other California high school. Six students have graduated so far, beginning maritime careers.  Jim also initiated the Banning High School – ITEP Scholarship Fund with the Foundation, over $200,000 have been raised to date.

Jim and Jill spend their summers in Christmas Cove, Maine with their family and grandkids!
