How to Find Motivation When You Feel Like Giving Up  (0 replies)

College is the most stressful time for us all. It tests our patience and our ability to succeed and has the potential to define the rest of our lives.

To succeed is about perception and how we view things. Life is a series of obstacles. Sometimes you fall, sometimes you get knocked out completely, but it’s how you get up and overcome those obstacles that end up defining you. We all go through these moments in early adulthood when we feel like giving up, when nothing matters anymore and we start questioning the meaning of our existence. Yet, there is always hope. We just need to figure out where to find it.

Maintain Your Control

To find that indication of hope, the first and foremost thing you can do is not give in to your helplessness. The minute you feel like you are not in control, you have already lost the battle. You need to look within yourself for that hope because no one else – your friends, parents, or teachers – can help you find it.

Alter Your Thinking

You can alter your cognitive processes. An approach suggested by Alfred Adler teaches you to act ‘as if.’ It preaches that you should force yourself to take the action you are afraid of and if you act as if the action will work, eventually it will. Thus, if you’re stressed about finals, just pretend as if you know everything in the syllabus, and you will have the confidence to achieve a good score. Some positive quotes can help you change your thinking.

Introspection

Introspection is the key to having a healthy cognitive process. You need to first figure out why you feel like giving up. Is it the lack of good grades or is it worrying about how to pay the fee for the next semester? Once you solve this secret, you can take the next step.

Once you figure out the reason for your stress, you can start planning ways to avoid it and motivate yourself further. If you’re stressed about your grades, you can devote extra hours to studying, divide your work in portions and reward yourself after completing each segment.

Similarly, you can motivate yourself in any other situation by first finding out the root cause of your sudden discouragement.

Perceive Positively

Overall, the key to stay motivated is perception. You can either become the victim or become a survivor. Either you can sit and feel sorry for yourself (and it’s okay to feel sorry for yourself at times, as long as you know when and how to get back up), or you can get up and fight, learn from your mistakes, take what you deserve and come out on top because you know that it’s the place you deserve to be at.

At this age, giving up will end up defining the rest of your life, so stay motivated and stay focused to achieve your goal. Here are some positive motivational quotes that are bound to boost your confidence in yourself.
